"Sunflowers" 
2 versions of a Linocut with chine colle, 6”x 6” (block). 

This is the third print created for my 2022 art calendar illustrating select items from my CSA. 

The process for these is that I arrange, photograph, sketch first, then carve into a linoblock and print, adding chine collé of for color. I will eventually be doing a hand-colored version. 

This is supposed to be in connection with the Red Earth Farm CSA project I did in 2018. 

Sketchbook Sunday: Drawing Sunflowers with Lysi

By now the sunflowers are bending over and all but a few have lost their yellow pedals. So this week Lysi and I decided to go outside and draw from ours before they are completely gone for the season. These are my favorite two drawings we did. Mine is to the left and Lysi's is below. Both are pencil drawings that we then elaborated on with watercolors and oil pastel resist and salt wash.

This is the third in a series for a single sheet handmade book called In My Yard. This book will be submitted to the exhibition Ritual taking place in December in Philadelphia. 

The first summer after we bought our current home I planted a forest of sunflowers in the front yard (see below photo.) I wanted to make my mark on the block. The result was that finches who resided in the large tree across the street began regularly feeding on the sunflower seeds. It was delightful to hang out on my front porch and watch these brightly-colored birds (American goldfinches turn yellow during the summer) fly back and forth and nimbly perch on the thick stems of my ten foot high flower garden.
