"Sunflowers"

"Sunflowers"
2 versions of a Linocut with chine colle, 6”x 6” (block).

This is the third print created for my 2022 art calendar illustrating select items from my CSA.

The process for these is that I arrange, photograph, sketch first, then carve into a linoblock and print, adding chine collé of for color. I will eventually be doing a hand-colored version.

This is supposed to be in connection with the Red Earth Farm CSA project I did in 2018.

"Sunflower Series #8" by Ouida Touchón

Image used with the permission of the artist. More of Ouida Touchon's work can be found at her website.

The sunflowers have all bend and bowed, petals wilted and turned dull brown. We feel our longing for them in the chilled air and the call of hungry birds.

Sketchbook Sunday: Drawing Sunflowers with Lysi

By now the sunflowers are bending over and all but a few have lost their yellow pedals. So this week Lysi and I decided to go outside and draw from ours before they are completely gone for the season. These are my favorite two drawings we did. Mine is to the left and Lysi's is below. Both are pencil drawings that we then elaborated on with watercolors and oil pastel resist and salt wash.

"Sunflower"

I made this for a print exchange: [Baren] Exchange #65. The image is 8" x 12.5" and the paper is 10" x 15". It is printed in oil-based ink on Sulphite block printing paper. I made an edition of 23 for the exchange.

I had some wood blocks lying around that have very difficult grain to work with. The soft parts of the wood fleck out very easily, while the tough parts are extremely difficult to carve. So it's hard to get fine details. I decided to bring out the grain more and create a very busy composition with lots of varied mark-making. The subject of a flower from my garden seemed appropriate for that style. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out.
